  Zhongbo received a departmental outstanding teaching award for the 2020/21 academic year, for teaching Physics 124.
• 11/07/2021
  We participated actively in Exploring Your Universe, UCLA's biggest science fair. Zhongbo gave a science talk on "Fundamental Structure of Matter". We also host a virtual booth, Nuclear and Particle Physics. Our team members John Terry, Mychal Valle, Farid Salazar, and Mishary Alrashed presented demos from Knudsen Hall and broadcast via zoom lively, while Kyle Lee (Berkeley Lab) and Sean Preins (UC Riverside) contributed remotely. We have shown cosmic ray detector, cloud chamber and simulations for Electron Ion Collider. Please see some pictures here.

  Zhongbo participated in Virtual IGEN Bridge Department Leaders Meeting, which was hosted by the Inclusive Graduate Education Network (IGEN). We are able to connect with Bridge Department leaders from the geosciences, physics and the chemical sciences, share information by leveraging the INCLUDES National Network and receive information and engage in discussion on how they can cultivate anti-racist graduate programs to better support the Fellows in their programs.   Zhongbo helped organize the first "hybrid" CFNS workshop (since the pandemic started in March 2020): The 2nd Workshop on Jets for 3D Imaging at the EIC, during September 27 - 29. For more information, see here.

  Mishary received a CEU2021 Award from APS. He will make a presentation at "The Conference Experience for Undergraduates", which is planned to take place in conjunction with DNP 2021 (virtual) October 11 - 14, 2021.

  Together with Tolga Altinoluk (NCBJ, Warsaw) and Renee Fatemi (Kentucky), Zhongbo organized "Week 4: Jets in cold quark and gluon matter" of the INT program: Probing QCD at High Energy and Density with Jets. We had a whole week of exciting talks during August 16 - 20.

  Zhongbo delivered a public lecture: "Strong Force - The structure of matter: from Rutherford's experiment to Electron-Ion Collider" at "Adventures in Particle Physics" Outreach Event organized by University of Stavanger (Norway). See the YouTube video here.

  Together with Edmond Iancu from Institute de Physique Theorique, Zhongbo moderated a round-table discussion on "Parton shower and SCET approach in medium" at "Week 2: Parton shower in high density matter" of the INT program: Probing QCD at High Energy and Density with Jets.

  Zhongbo participated in the plenary round-table discussion on "EIC Physics" at Quark Confinement and Hadron Spectrum 2021 conference. The full panel members are: Jian-Wei Qiu (moderator, JLab), Zhong-Bo Kang (UCLA), Peter Petreczky (BNL), Ignazio Scimemi (UCM).

  DOE granted Critical Decision 1 (CD-1) for the Electron-Ion Collider. Following DOE's approval of "mission need" (known as CD-0) in December 2019, this announcement marks the completion of the project's definition phase and its conceptual design. Approval of CD-1 provides the authorization to begin the project execution phase, starting with preliminary design. See news here.

  Zhongbo gave an overview talk today, Theory of transverse/forward spin physics at RHIC, at the CFNS Workshop: RHIC Science Programs Informative Toward EIC in the Coming Years.

  Zhongbo's tenure promotion is approved, and he will be promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, effectively July 1, 2021.
